If you have recently had a tooth extraction at Dental Spa Solutions, the following advice will help you recover comfortably and reduce the risk of complications.
Call NowThe local anaesthetic will usually wear off within 2–6 hours.
Avoid hot food and drinks during this time to prevent burning your mouth.
Take care not to bite your lip, cheek or tongue while numb.
Do not rinse, spit forcefully or touch the area for 24 hours.
Avoid disturbing the blood clot in the socket — this is essential for proper healing.
Stick to soft foods for the first few days (such as pasta, mashed potato, soup, yoghurt or scrambled eggs).
Avoid very hot, spicy or hard foods.
Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using a straw for 24 hours.
After 24 hours, you can clean your teeth as normal, taking care to avoid the extraction site.
From 24 hours onwards, start gentle warm saltwater rinses:
Dissolve two teaspoons of salt in a large cup of warm (not hot) water.
Rinse gently at least 4 times a day, especially after meals.
Continue for up to one week or until the socket has healed.
Some discomfort and swelling are normal and may increase over the first 48–72 hours before settling.
Take pain relief as recommended by your dentist.
Avoid painkillers containing aspirin, as this can increase bleeding.
Do not exceed the recommended dose.
If antibiotics were prescribed, complete the full course.
