Root canal treatment can help save a tooth that is badly infected, damaged, or affected by deep decay. At Dental Spa Solutions, our aim is to relieve pain, remove infection, and help you avoid tooth loss wherever possible.
If you are experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity, swelling, or a dental abscess, a consultation is the first step. We will assess the tooth carefully and talk through whether root canal treatment is the right option for you.
Root canal treatment is used to treat infection inside a tooth. When the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause discomfort and may spread further if left untreated.
The treatment is designed to clean out the infection, protect the tooth, and restore it so it can continue to function.
Root canal treatment may be recommended if a tooth has:
If the problem is not treated, the tooth may eventually need to be removed. Root canal treatment offers a way to try to preserve the natural tooth.
At Dental Spa Solutions, root canal treatment is carried out by Nick Gibb and Rajiv Tanday, both of whom have an MSc in Endodontics.
Their training and experience help ensure that your treatment is planned carefully and tailored to the individual tooth and situation.
Every case is different, but root canal treatment usually involves a consultation first, followed by treatment that may take place over one or more visits depending on the condition of the tooth.
The main stages are:
Consultation and assessment
We examine the tooth, review your symptoms, and confirm whether root canal treatment is the best option.
Cleaning and disinfection
The infected tissue inside the tooth is removed, and the root canal system is cleaned thoroughly.
Filling the root canals
The canals are filled and sealed to help prevent reinfection.
Restoring the tooth
The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown to protect it and help it function properly again.
In some cases, treatment can be completed in one visit, while others may need more than one appointment. We will explain what to expect before treatment begins.
After treatment, you may need follow-up appointments so we can check that the tooth is settling well and that healing is progressing as expected.
It is also important to restore the tooth properly afterwards. A filling or crown is often needed to protect the tooth and help it stay strong.
We understand that cost is a common concern. Once we have assessed the tooth, our team can talk through the recommended treatment options and explain the likely costs clearly, so you can make an informed decision.
If you are worried about a tooth or think you may need root canal treatment, please get in touch for advice. We are here to help, and we will always aim to make the process as clear and comfortable as possible.
During the first visit we will need to remove the infected pulp. We numb the tooth and the surrounding area first so that you do not feel any pain, and then use special tiny tools to take the pulp away. We also shape the root canal so it is easier to fill.
The tooth will need to settle down, so we will give it a temporary filling. Sometimes this filling will include medication to help to destroy any germs and prevent further infection.
On your next visit we will examine the tooth to ensure that the infection has cleared properly, and will replace the temporary filling with a permanent one. Sometimes a filling will be all you will need, but often the root canal treatment weakens the tooth and it will need strengthening with a crown.
